Olaines prison employee caught driving under the influence. Criminal prosecution initiated.

The Internal Security Bureau of Latvia has called for the criminal prosecution of an Olaines prison employee for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Internal Security Bureau (IDB) in Latvia has initiated proceedings to recommend the Western Zemgale Prosecutor's Office to pursue criminal charges against an employee of the Olaines Prison Administration for driving a vehicle while intoxicated. The information was released by the IDB to the LETA news agency. The initial investigation was conducted by the State Police, which uncovered evidence that the prison official, while off-duty, drove a personal vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding two promiles.

The charge against the prison employee is based on the Latvian Criminal Law, specifically article 262, section one. This provision addresses the criminal act of operating a vehicle when the alcohol concentration in the breath exceeds 1.5 promiles. The findings from the preliminary investigation indicate serious misconduct on the part of the official, raising concerns about public safety, especially considering the individual’s role in the prison service.

This case not only highlights issues related to law enforcement but also poses questions regarding accountability within the prison system. The investigation's outcome may affect public trust in prison employees and could lead to stricter regulations governing their conduct, particularly regarding substance use while operating vehicles, thus amplifying discussions around safety protocols.
