Recicla MA collects over 16 tons of waste and ensures income for collectors during Carnival

The Recicla MA program collected more than 16 tons of waste during Carnival 2026 in São Luís, Brazil, while providing income for waste collectors.

The Recicla MA program, developed by the Maranhão government, successfully diverted over 16 tons of waste left by carnival-goers during the Carnaval 2026 celebrations in São Luís. This program specifically operated in the Circuit Vem Pro Mar area along the Litorânea Avenue, an epicenter for festivities. According to the Environmental and Natural Resources Secretary (Sema), this initiative not only promotes proper waste disposal practices but also strengthens the livelihood of waste collectors in the region.

The breakdown of collected materials revealed that metals accounted for approximately 8,690 kilograms and plastics for about 5,315 kilograms. This significant collection showcases the regular waste patterns observed following extensive festival celebrations on the coast. Interestingly, in the previous year's collection, only 5 tons were gathered, and the target for this year was initially set at 7 tons, indicating a remarkable doubling of expectations in terms of waste managed through this initiative.

According to Secretary Pedro Chagas, the success of Recicla MA illustrates how environmental care and festive celebrations can coexist while providing economic opportunities for local collectors. He emphasized that the initiative received support from Governor Carlos Brandão, showcasing the government's commitment to integrating sustainability into community events. This accomplishment not only reflects environmental responsibility but also highlights an innovative approach to social and ecological challenges faced during large public gatherings.
