Two people evacuated from flooded houses in Garkalne

Two people were safely evacuated from flooded homes in Garkalne due to melting snow and an obstructed drainage system.

In Garkalne, Latvia, the fire and rescue service responded to a request from the municipal police to evacuate individuals from a flooded area shortly before noon. Utilizing a rescue boat, firefighters were able to reach the submerged property and bring the two residents to safety. The flooding occurred as the property is situated in a low-lying area where water from melting snow accumulated, exacerbated by a frozen drainage ditch that hindered proper water flow from the area.

This flooding incident occurs during the predicted spring thaw period, expected to last from March 5 to April 15 this year. With a significantly thicker layer of snow and ice in Latvia’s rivers compared to previous years, the risk of spring floods is raised. As a result, residents in high-risk areas will be warned about possible flooding through cell broadcasts, and the State Fire and Rescue Service is prepared to assist in rescuing and evacuating individuals affected by flooding during this season.

The situation illustrates the broader challenges that result from climate variations and increased precipitation, highlighting the need for effective communication and preparedness in such circumstances. The local authorities are taking proactive measures to mitigate the impacts of water accumulation and ensure the safety of residents during the upcoming flood season, reflecting an understanding of the changing environmental conditions.
