Two people rescued from an ice floe off the coast of Latvia

Two individuals were rescued from an ice floe drifting at sea off the coast of Latvia over the weekend.

Over the weekend, two people were successfully rescued from an ice floe that had drifted into the sea off Latvia. Reports indicate that the individuals had been walking on the ice when they became stranded and were swept away from safety. The Latvian port in the capital city of Riga confirmed the incident on Sunday, detailing the rescue efforts undertaken by local maritime authorities.

The situation unfolded on Saturday evening when maritime rescue services received an alert about the two people stranded on the ice. They were in a precarious situation as the large ice floe detached from the shoreline near Plienciems in the Gulf of Riga. In response, a Finnish-made icebreaker named 'Varma' was dispatched to the scene as it was the nearest vessel capable of providing assistance in icy conditions.

After five hours of searching, the crew of the Varma located the stranded individuals and brought them to safety around 1 AM local time. This rescue operation underscores the dangers associated with walking on ice and the swift response of maritime services in ensuring public safety in adverse conditions.
