‘Kwanbong-gwon and Coupang’ Special Investigation Team Completes 90-Day Investigation... Coupang CFS CEO Indicted; Transfer of Tizzi Allegation to Prosecutors

The special investigation team concluded a 90-day investigation into allegations of influence in the Coupang severance payment case and the disposal of Kwanbong-gwon,这是一个与Coupang和相关个人的指控有关的案件。

The special investigation team, led by An Gwon-seop, announced the results of their 90-day investigation on May 5, addressing multiple allegations including external pressure on the decision not to prosecute the Coupang severance payment case and the disposal of the Kwanbong-gwon evidence. They managed to indict several individuals and connected entities involved in the incidents under investigation. Despite revealing misconduct related to the handling of evidence and directives from prosecutors, the team failed to secure concrete evidence regarding the Coupang collusion allegations.

The probe focused on seven major incidents involving Coupang, notably the non-payment of severance for contracted workers and pressure from the Incheon District Prosecutor's Office regarding key decisions in the case. This culminated in the indictment of some prosecutors who were found to have abused their power in managing the investigation. The special team also scrutinized the conduct of former and current representatives of Coupang Fulfillment Services (CFS), who were charged with violations relating to scattered severance payments to workers totaling approximately 12.49 billion KRW.

Unfortunately for the investigative team, they did not find sufficient evidence to substantiate claims of corruption or collusion between Coupang and governmental bodies. This raises broader questions about accountability within prosecutorial activities and the protection of labor rights in South Korea. The inability to prosecute in the latter context might give rise to concerns among workers regarding job security and severance entitlements.
