Special Prosecutor Investigates Unlawful Pressure Allegations in Coupang Case
The Special Prosecutor's team is conducting a third investigation into prosecutor Eom Hee-jun regarding allegations of unlawful pressure during the Coupang severance payment incident.
On the 19th, the Special Prosecutor's team led by Ahn Kwon-seop summoned Eom Hee-jun, a prosecutor from the Gwangju High Prosecutors’ Office, for questioning regarding allegations of unlawful pressure related to the Coupang severance pay case. This marks the third investigation into Eom, who is being questioned as a suspect for allegedly interfering with the exercise of rights. The questioning took place at the Special Prosecutor's office in Seocho, Seoul, beginning at 10 a.m. Eom's previous interrogations occurred on September 9 and October 9, respectively.
Prior to the investigation, Eom addressed reporters, alleging that Shinn Ga-hyeon, the prosecutor in charge of the case, sent messages to colleagues and acquaintances eight days before an individual meeting, indicating that the Coupang case would be difficult to prosecute. He claimed that Shinn did not merely communicate an absence of evidence but warned about the risks of a certain prosecutor seeking fame by pursuing charges against individuals who were not culpable. Eom asserted that there is objective evidence confirming that he never coerced Shinn into determining that there was no wrongdoing in the case.
Eom further revealed that he had provided his mobile phone password to the Special Prosecutor's team, which reviewed over 1,100 call records, 3,400 text messages, 6,400 browser histories, and 1,400 photos without finding any links to Coupang. He emphasized that the absence of any illicit motives or objectives concerning the abuse of authority charge had been objectively substantiated through forensics on his phone. The investigative focus is rooted in allegations that Eom pressured key prosecutors to dismiss charges against Um Seong-hwan, former CEO of Coupang Fulfillment Services, which were, in turn, eventually dropped by the Incheon District Prosecutor's Office in April.
