Power firms install 677,942 meters in one year
Nigerian electricity distribution companies reported a significant increase in customer metering, reaching nearly 7 million metered customers by the end of 2025.
As of December 2025, Nigeria's electricity distribution companies have made notable progress in customer metering, achieving a total of 6,966,584 metered customers, which translates to a national metering rate of 57.27%. This year saw a substantial increase in meter installations, with 677,942 new meters added, reflecting a growing commitment to improving customer billing accuracy. In December alone, the number of new customers who were metered surged to 109,556, indicating a positive trend towards addressing the issue of estimated billing.
The data provided by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission highlights that while significant strides have been made in metering, over 5.19 million customers are still dependent on estimated billing. This situation presents ongoing challenges in terms of electricity access and billing fairness, suggesting that many customers continue to face uncertainties regarding their electricity costs. The progress made in December, particularly with an increase in the number of metered customers from the previous monthβs 88,592, showcases the distribution companies' efforts to accelerate their metering programs towards year-end.
Moving forward, the increased number of metered customers is crucial for improving electricity revenue management and ensuring that customers are billed accurately according to their actual usage. The near approach to the milestone of seven million metered customers represents a crucial development in Nigeria's power sector, as it may encourage further investments in infrastructure and technology to enhance the overall electricity distribution system and service delivery across the country.
