Not all electricity meters are free, NERC clarifies

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has clarified that while some electricity meters are provided for free under government programs, other options exist for customers willing to pay for quicker service amidst confusion over installation practices.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has recently addressed the confusion surrounding the meters being installed throughout Nigeria, stating that not all meters are offered for free. During a radio interview, NERC Chairman Musiliu Oseni clarified that while meters funded by government initiatives can be installed at no cost to customers, other payment options are available for those who prefer immediate installation. This explanation comes in response to numerous inquiries about the Federal Government’s metering programs and complaints regarding potential illegal charges imposed by electricity distribution companies.

Oseni emphasized that the meters supplied under the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP) are fully funded by the Federal Government, ensuring that customers receive them without any financial burden at the point of installation. He acknowledged that delays in the provision of these free meters might lead some customers to consider alternative options available under the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme. For those individuals, payment for the meter and its installation can be made upfront to hasten the process.

This clarification from NERC is crucial as it seeks to protect consumers from misinformation and potential exploitation by utility companies. As the country continues to improve its electricity infrastructure, ensuring transparency in the metering process will be vital to maintaining customer trust and encouraging compliance with regulatory standards in the energy sector.
