Justice authorizes Nunes administration to open park closed since 2012

The São Paulo Court of Justice has allowed Mayor Ricardo Nunes' administration to open the Primavera municipal park, which has been closed since 2012 due to concerns raised by the Public Ministry.

The São Paulo Court of Justice has given the green light for Mayor Ricardo Nunes' administration to inaugurate the Primavera municipal park, located in the eastern zone of the capital, which has remained closed since 2012 following concerns from the Public Ministry about the site's history as a sanitary landfill in the 1980s. The judge, Tamara Priscila Tocci, ruled against the Public Ministry's request to keep the park closed over fears of soil contamination, stating that these claims were unfounded.

The decision was celebrated by city officials, who highlighted that they had complied with all environmental regulations set forth by Cetesb, the agency responsible for environmental licensing in São Paulo. The park covers an area of 122,000 square meters, roughly equivalent to 17 football fields, and is located in São Miguel Paulista. Despite being closed, the city reportedly spent 1.7 million reais annually on park maintenance, which includes the employment of gardening staff and maintenance crews at the site.

The reopening of Primavera park marks a significant development for the community, as it is expected to provide recreational space and opportunities for local residents who have been deprived of access for over a decade. The ruling may set a precedent for how similar cases involving land use and environmental concerns are addressed in the future, influencing public policy and community engagement in urban development planning in São Paulo.
