JBS makes a R$10 million agreement for violating rules and leaving employees with workdays over 10 hours in MT
The food multinational JBS has agreed to pay R$ 10 million for violating work-hour regulations in its Mato Grosso facility.
JBS, the multinational food company known for its brands Friboi and Seara, has reached an agreement to pay R$ 10 million after being found in violation of a Term of Conduct Adjustment (TAC) that limited work hours at its facility in Diamantino, located 183 km from CuiabΓ‘. This agreement was disclosed on December 4 and follows an investigation by the Public Ministry of Labor in Mato Grosso (MPT-MT), which reported that employees worked over 10 hours a day in numerous instances.
Between January 2013 and August 2015, the MPT-MT recorded 30,455 cases where workers exceeded the daily 10-hour limit, raising serious labor rights concerns. In addition to the R$ 10 million settlement, JBS will face a further R$ 1.7 million fine imposed by the Superior Labor Court (TST) due to the company's attempts to delay the judicial process through appeals.
This case exemplifies the ongoing challenges in enforcing labor laws in Brazil, particularly in the agricultural and food processing sectors, where companies frequently face scrutiny over their treatment of employees. The outcome may encourage stronger enforcement and compliance among companies in similar industries to avoid such costly penalties in the future.
