Employers who kept elderly man in conditions akin to slavery for 16 years sign agreement of R$ 540 million in MT

After 16 years of working under conditions equivalent to slavery, an elderly man in Brazil will receive R$ 540,000 in labor rights compensation following a settlement with his employers.

An elderly man in Brazil, who was rescued after enduring 16 years in slavery-like working conditions, is set to receive R$ 540,000 in labor rights compensation. The settlement, arranged by the Labor Public Prosecutor's Office in Mato Grosso (MPT-MT), follows a complaint lodged in February 2024 when the victim was 63 years old. The case gained attention due to the extreme conditions faced by the man, who worked alone on a remote property located approximately 18 kilometers from urban areas, with no access to public transportation.

According to the MPT, the worker was tasked with various laborious duties, including taking care of animals, maintaining fences and pens, cultivating small crops, and cleaning the external areas of the owners' home. The man's plight came to light when he expressed a desire to leave the property, leading to a rescue operation that facilitated his safe transition to the local social assistance network. The court approved the agreement, resulting in the conclusion of the judicial process.

This case highlights serious issues concerning labor rights and working conditions in Brazil, particularly in remote agricultural areas where individuals may be vulnerable to exploitation. It underscores the need for continued vigilance and enforcement of labor laws to protect workers, especially those in precarious and isolated situations, from abuse and maltreatment.
