Public Prosecutor's Office sues owner of Sadia after abortions in factory in Mato Grosso
The Public Prosecutor's Office in Brazil has filed a lawsuit against MBRF, the owner of the brands Sadia and Perdigão, for negligence toward pregnant employees at a factory in Mato Grosso.
The Labor Public Prosecutor's Office (MPT) has initiated legal proceedings against MBRF, the parent company of popular food brands like Sadia and Perdigão, over allegations of negligence concerning pregnant workers at its Lucas do Rio Verde facility in Mato Grosso, Brazil. The MPT demands 20 million Brazilian reais in collective moral damages and the immediate relocation of pregnant employees from areas subject to high noise levels. MBRF disputes these claims, asserting that it adheres strictly to existing legislation that mandates the use of personal protective equipment in environments exceeding 80 decibels.
The case gained attention after a tragic incident involving a Venezuelan employee who was eight months pregnant with twins. She fell ill at the beginning of her shift in April 2024 and, according to the legal filing, did not receive timely medical assistance, which led to the loss of her babies. This heartbreaking event, which unfolded at the factory's entrance while she awaited transport to a medical facility, underscored serious concerns regarding the treatment of pregnant employees within the company.
Following this incident, the investigation has raised broader questions about workplace safety and the protective measures in place for vulnerable workers, particularly in physically demanding environments. As the MPT's lawsuit unfolds, the implications may extend beyond MBRF, potentially prompting a review of industry standards regarding the treatment of pregnant employees in similar sectors.
