Women in IT moves to empower female students in technology
The Nigerian Women in Information Technology has launched the Campus Tech Queens Initiative to empower female students in technology through mentorship and training.
The Campus Tech Queens Initiative has been launched by the Nigerian Women in Information Technology with the goal of preparing female students in higher education for success in the global digital landscape. This program was inaugurated at Kogi State Polytechnic in Lokoja and focuses on identifying, training, and showcasing womenβs talents in the tech sector across Nigerian campuses. It is expected to serve as a catalyst for increased participation of women in technology and to showcase their abilities to the broader tech community.
Dr. Oluwakemi Ayodele, the president of NIWIIT, highlighted that the initiative aims to bridge the gender gap prevalent in the technology field by promoting gender inclusion and ensuring that women and girls receive professional development opportunities in IT. The program will emphasize mentorship as a critical component, guiding participants through the necessary stages to achieve digital excellence. By focusing on capacity building and providing actionable insights into the tech industry, the initiative helps equip women with the skills needed to excel in various tech roles.
The Campus Tech Queens Initiative is structured into six distinct stages, beginning with raising awareness among students, followed by registration, training, mentorship, participation in a state-level hackathon, and culminating in a national grand finale. The initiative not only encourages girls to pursue careers in technology but also includes post-hackathon incubation to nurture their ideas and leadership skills. This comprehensive approach is anticipated to drive significant changes in the representation of women in technology in Nigeria, fostering a new generation of female tech leaders.
