A symbolic stone was laid on Wednesday to mark the beginning of construction of a new data center in the Vilnius district, with completion expected by the end of 2027.
On Wednesday, the beginning of construction for a new facility in the Vilnius district was ceremonially marked by the laying of a symbolic stone. This new data center, which is being developed with a substantial investment of 26 million euros, is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The officials emphasized the significance of this project in positioning Lithuania as a center for a clean digital economy in Northern Europe, leveraging the country's advanced technological capabilities and IT talents.
Giedrė Kaminskaitė-Salters, the head of the telecommunications company Telia, highlighted that Lithuania might not have abundant natural resources but has a strong tech foundation and renewable energy potential. This data center will serve as a critical infrastructure point, building a network of high-reliability data centers tied together with an optical fiber ring linking existing data centers in Vilnius, thereby enhancing the digital infrastructure necessary for modern economic needs.
Initially, the facility will consist of two modular buildings capable of housing over 400 server racks, with plans to expand as demand increases. The anticipated growth of data-centric services illustrates the changing landscape of global economies and the essential role of data centers as the 'new oil' in the digital age, further underpinning the relevance of such developments in Lithuania’s economic strategy.
