On Wednesday morning, 96 winter vehicles involved in road salting

Latvia deployed 96 winter machinery units to treat icy roads across the country on Wednesday morning.

On Wednesday morning, Latvia faced widespread icy road conditions, prompting the deployment of 96 winter vehicles equipped for salting and treating the roads. According to information from VSIA "Latvijas valsts ceļi" (LVC), which manages the country's road infrastructure, the worst driving conditions were reported in regions like Vidzemē, the western part of Zemgale, and areas along the right bank of the Daugava River in Pierīga. Conversely, Latgale experienced the best road conditions, while Kurzemē faced variable situations.

Additionally, the LVC highlighted that driving on regional roads remains challenging, particularly in Vidzemē and around various municipalities such as Jelgava, Dobele, Tukums, Saldus, Liepāja, Talsi, Kuldīga, and Ventspils. The authorities have issued warnings for motorists to consider extra driving time and to ensure that their vehicles are equipped for the winter weather conditions, especially on gravel roads, which may be particularly difficult to navigate in the coming days and weeks.

During winter, gravel roads are maintained with a compacted layer of snow; however, this year, there is a thicker accumulation due to snowmelt. Motorists are advised to prepare adequately for the challenging driving conditions ahead as the weather continues to change and affect road surfaces throughout the region.
