This winter is especially harsh for Latvian drivers: the number of roadside assistance calls has significantly increased in January
Latvian drivers have faced a surge in roadside assistance calls, doubling compared to last January, largely due to battery failures amid the cold winter weather.
In Latvia, the winter season has proven particularly challenging for drivers, with the number of roadside assistance calls reaching 1,490 in January 2023, nearly double the 658 calls recorded in January 2022. The biggest culprit for these calls has been battery failures, a trend that has skyrocketed by 4.5 times compared to the previous year. This alarming increase indicates a growing concern for motor vehicle reliability during cold weather conditions, as many drivers found themselves unprepared for the harsh winter conditions.
One of the most common issues reported is the inability to start vehicles due to dead batteries, which accounted for 303 assistance requests this January, a steep rise from just 68 calls in the same month last year. Experts attribute this increase to the chemical processes in batteries becoming slower in extreme cold, diminishing their ability to provide the necessary power for vehicle operation. Uģis Ieviņš, head of the KASKO product at BALTA, highlighted that while battery-related problems occur year-round, the spike seen this January emphasizes the impact of cold temperatures on vehicle performance.
As winter progresses, it is crucial for drivers to be aware of these challenges and consider preventive measures, such as ensuring their batteries are in good condition and being prepared for potentially hazardous driving conditions. The notable rise in roadside assistance calls serves as a reminder of the importance of vehicle maintenance and readiness during the winter months, especially in regions like Latvia where severe winter weather can dramatically affect driving capabilities.
