Ice-coated roads in many places in Latvia

Icy conditions in various regions of Latvia are complicating driving on the country’s main and regional roads, according to the Latvian State Roads administration.

This morning, freezing conditions have made driving difficult in several areas of Latvia, particularly in Kurzeme, Zemgale, and parts of Vidzeme. The Latvian State Roads administration has reported that the icy road conditions prompted the deployment of winter service equipment, with 60 units actively involved in spreading anti-skid materials to improve safety on the roads.

Specific regions facing challenging driving conditions include the Tallinn highway (A1), Vidzeme highway (A2), Valmiera highway (A3), as well as several Rīga bypasses (A4 and A5), and Daugavpils highway (A6) among others. The report highlights various segments of these roads where drivers are advised to exercise caution due to ice, which can significantly increase the risk of accidents. Local authorities are working to mitigate these conditions and ensure safer travel.

This weather-related challenge not only impacts daily commuters but also raises concerns for winter road maintenance strategies across the country. The timely response by road maintenance services is crucial as Latvia navigates through winter, aiming to keep the national and regional transport networks functioning efficiently in adverse weather conditions.
