Pile-up involving seven vehicles leaves 12 injured and blocks traffic on MG-050 during roadworks

A pile-up involving seven vehicles on the MG-050 in Itaúna left 12 people injured, prompting a complete closure of the road during ongoing construction work.

On Tuesday, a serious traffic accident occurred on the MG-050 in Itaúna involving seven vehicles, resulting in 12 individuals suffering from light injuries. According to the Police Military Road, a 'cegonha' truck was unable to stop in time as it approached a construction zone operating under a 'stop and go' system, leading to a chain reaction collision. This truck first struck another truck, which in turn collided with a pick-up truck, causing a domino effect that involved two passenger vehicles, a van, and another smaller truck, which left the scene before authorities could document the incident.

Fortunately, despite the series of impacts, all 12 individuals involved reportedly only sustained minor injuries, primarily due to the fact that all occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the accidents. Emergency medical services (Samu) promptly attended to the victims at the site, ensuring their injuries were treated quickly and efficiently. While the incident resulted in injuries, it could have been far worse had additional safety measures not been in place.

The accident led to a complete blockade of the MG-050 in the affected area, causing significant traffic delays as crews worked on the scene. Traffic disruption during highway construction is not uncommon, but this event highlights the need for increased caution during such operations to prevent further accidents. Nearby drivers and potential commuters were advised to seek alternative routes until the area could be safely cleared and reopened, emphasizing the ongoing challenges presented by road work combined with vehicular traffic.
