Suspicion of Stealing 10 Million Yen from the Scene of an Unexplained Death, Arrest of a Police Sergeant from Osaka Prefectural Police

A police sergeant in Osaka has been arrested for allegedly stealing 10 million yen from the scene of an investigation into an unexplained death.

The Osaka Prefectural Police arrested 52-year-old Police Sergeant Shin Goto from the Minami Sakai Police Station on charges of embezzling property following the discovery of an unexplained death. Authorities claim that Goto took approximately 10.11 million yen from an apartment in Sakai City where the body was found. After the incident was reported to the police around June of the previous year, an investigation was initiated to determine the veracity of these claims against Goto.

During an investigation on February 2, Goto reportedly visited the scene of a death and, while there, is accused of taking the cash that was left inside the apartment, amounting to over 10 million yen. Goto has since confessed to the theft, attributing his actions to a moment of temptation. This case raises serious concerns about police conduct and ethics, particularly regarding the handling of evidence and property linked to criminal activities.

The incident has drawn significant attention in Japan, particularly due to the role of law enforcement in protecting the integrity of crime scenes and ensuring justice. The Ohio Prefectural Police's Internal Affairs Division is conducting a stringent investigation into the matter. Depending on the outcomes of this investigation, this could lead to broader discussions on systemic issues within the police force, potentially affecting public trust and the integrity of policing in Japan.
