Biathlete Lozbers adds to his medal haul at the World Championship for Youth
Latvian biathlete Lozbers won a world championship gold in the individual event and triumphed in the mixed relay.
At the World Championship for Youth held in Arber, Latvian biathlete 16-year-old Lozbers achieved remarkable feats, winning a gold medal in the individual distance event and contributing to his team's success in the mixed relay. Despite a strong performance in skiing, Lozbers faced challenges during the shooting segments, where he made mistakes that prompted penalties, whereas Slovak competitor Markuss Sklenāriks showcased a perfect shooting record and secured first place ahead of Lozbers by a 19-second margin.
In addition to Lozbers' achievements, Latvia fielded a strong team for the youth sprint event, featuring competitors such as Rūdolfs Raudziņš, who secured 25th place, Ernests Solovjovs in 72nd, and Rainers Krišmanis in 79th. The championship, which includes participants from across the globe, is set to conclude on March 8, emphasizing the importance of showcasing young talent in biathlon at the international level.
The current championship marks the last occurrence of this youth-focused event, as the International Biathlon Union (IBU) plans to discontinue the youth championship after 2027, maintaining only the junior division championships moving forward. This change signals a shift in how young athletes will compete in biathlon, putting more focus on junior categories instead.
