House collapses in voçoroca after heavy rain in Maranhão
A house collapsed in the Frei Alberto neighborhood of Grajaú, Maranhão, due to heavy rains causing significant erosion in the area.
On Saturday, September 28, a house in the Frei Alberto neighborhood of Grajaú, Maranhão, collapsed following intense rainfall that exacerbated an ongoing erosion issue leading to the formation of a voçoroca. The collapse resulted in a portion of the home falling into the crater created by the erosion. Fortunately, the homeowner was not present during the incident, and the local government had been monitoring the situation for some time, considering it a significant risk to the structural integrity of homes in the area.
The city of Grajaú's officials reported that the voçoroca, which has existed for over 20 years, has been a longstanding issue that has worsened over the decades. They acknowledged that a formal notice regarding the risk of collapse was issued to the affected family back in 2025, providing them with ample warning before the incident occurred. Since October 17, the residents had already vacated the premises and were temporarily living in rented accommodation through a social rental program initiated by the municipality.
Currently, the local government is actively monitoring 13 families residing in areas at risk of erosion and has successfully integrated six of those families into the social rental program as a precautionary measure. This case highlights the growing challenges posed by environmental degradation and the need for proactive intervention by local authorities to prevent similar incidents in the future.
