Flashing and booming in the sky of Helsinki on Saturday

A practice exercise for boaters involving distress flares will take place in Helsinki, coloring the sky red on Saturday.

On Saturday, the Helsinki Sea Rescue Association is coordinating a practice event where boaters are trained in the use of distress flares from 10 AM to 5 PM. The exercise will involve firing distress flares, and participants will also have the opportunity to practice using emergency torches and orange smoke signals. Residents are notified that there is no need to inform emergency services about the flares being fired during this organized training session, which will take place between Santahamina and Laajasalo.

The event has received the necessary permits from authorities to ensure it adheres to safety regulations, and organizers hope that there will be no increase in calls to emergency services due to the practice. Sami Korpi, the event leader, advises anyone unsure about the situation to contact the authorities, particularly if they suspect that a flare may be related to an actual emergency. This exercise serves as a crucial practice for boaters to learn how to effectively signal for help in real emergencies, potentially preventing danger to themselves and others at sea.

Volunteer sea rescuers and boating clubs periodically conduct such training exercises to ensure that boaters are equipped with the skills necessary to handle emergency situations effectively. The community's support for these events highlights the importance of preparedness and safety in water activities, emphasizing the collaborative effort of both trained professionals and casual boaters in maintaining safe maritime practices.
