Warning maps glow yellow – driving conditions become dangerous

Finland's meteorological institute has issued widespread warnings about hazardous driving conditions due to expected adverse weather this Thursday through Saturday.

In Finland, the meteorological agency has alerted citizens about the dangerous driving conditions forecasted from Thursday to Saturday, as the warning maps glow yellow. There are specific warnings not only for drivers but also for pedestrians concerning slippery weather. The traffic monitoring center, Fintraffic, has also warned of a significant risk of traffic accidents in the coming days, advising commuters to allow for extra travel time in anticipation of worsening conditions.

According to Sara Salonen, a meteorologist from Foreca, multiple factors will contribute to the deterioration of driving conditions. Snowfall is expected to worsen road conditions particularly on Thursday, compounded by a warm front moving in from the west that will lead to slippery roads. As precipitation transitions from snow to rain, the potential for freezing rain increases, which heightens the risk of hazardous driving conditions.

The impact of snowfall on road safety is a critical concern, especially since the weather system will affect the entire country. In some northern regions, several centimeters of new snow are predicted from Thursday through Friday. These weather warnings underline the need for drivers and pedestrians alike to exercise increased caution during this period, as conditions could pose serious risks for all road users throughout the affected areas.
