The Hippo of Letters Navigates Guayaquil: A Laboratory for Creating Independent Publications
A workshop and laboratory for editing and creating independent publications called Hipopótamo has been operating in Guayaquil for 16 years, fostering innovation in literature and publishing education.
The Hipopótamo, a laboratory and workshop focused on editing and creating independent publications, has been operating in Guayaquil for 16 years. The workshop is named after a creature that thrives both on land and in water, symbolizing the dual nature of creativity that can be both formidable and fragile. Located within the School of Literature at the University of the Arts, Hipopótamo serves as a space for pedagogical innovation, particularly linked to the courses on Editing and Periodic Publications.
Participants in Hipopótamo can learn about the workings of a publishing house and engage directly with the production processes in the school's editing machines. They are also encouraged to get hands-on experience by contributing to the creation of a fanzine - a mix of 'fan' and 'magazine' that embodies a community-driven publication created by enthusiasts rather than professionals. This experiential approach not only enhances their understanding of publishing but also fosters a sense of community among budding creatives.
Over the years, Hipopótamo has expanded, akin to how male hippos continue to grow throughout their lives. In 2016, educator María Paulina Briones introduced the first Editing course in the curriculum, solidifying the workshop's role in supporting students' learning experiences and encouraging a new generation of independent publishers in Ecuador. This endeavor reflects a vibrant cultural movement within the country, highlighting the importance of literary creativity and community engagement in the face of contemporary challenges in the publishing industry.
