In the port city and the capital, border guards detained two men wanted by the police
Border guards in Klaipėda and Vilnius detained two men sought by local police for various crimes.
On Friday night in Klaipėda, at the Pilies border control post, officers from the State Border Guard Service detained a 45-year-old man who had been wanted by police since January 22 for evading a 30-day arrest sentence for a misdemeanor. This man was also of interest to law enforcement in Ireland, highlighting the international implications of his fugitive status. Upon his arrest, border guards informed the issuing authorities and transferred him to the local police for further processing.
In a separate incident on Sunday at the capital's airport, border guards identified another wanted individual among passengers heading to London. The man, a 26-year-old from Lentvaris, had an active search notice issued by police on February 24 regarding his alleged criminal activity. His apprehension at the airport, where he intended to collect smuggled cigarettes, underscores ongoing issues with cross-border smuggling and law enforcement's vigilance in monitoring such activities.
These events reflect the efforts of Lithuanian authorities to combat crime and enhance security, particularly in transportation hubs like airports and ports, which are often exploited by criminals. The apprehensions also emphasize the collaborative nature of law enforcement across borders, as seen in the case of the fugitive wanted in both Lithuania and Ireland. Such actions are essential in addressing transnational crime and protecting public safety.
