Research: Risky use of social networks in Lithuania is increasing - it can push youth into loneliness
Experts note that excessive use of social networks is linked to increased feelings of loneliness among youth in Lithuania.
According to experts, overuse of social media is connected to a heightened sense of loneliness, which may deteriorate emotional well-being, as reported by the media. A recent study reveals that 63% of Lithuanian respondents exhibit high emotional resilience—the ability to cope with life's challenges and stress—up from 58% the previous year. However, a significant two-thirds of the population still reports experiencing high to moderate stress levels.
The risk factors negatively affecting emotional well-being in Lithuania share similarities with other European Union countries. Lithuanians face sleep difficulties, risky alcohol consumption, and trauma at rates comparable to other EU residents. Notably, the proportion of the population engaging in risky social media use has risen from 23% to 27% over the past year, indicating a concerning trend that could exacerbate issues related to mental health and social isolation, particularly among youth.
In discussing the challenges of lonely and neglected children, experts emphasize that society often turns a blind eye to the harsh realities faced by these groups. With the increase in social media use, particularly among younger demographics, the potential for exacerbating feelings of loneliness and the neglect of crucial emotional support systems becomes a pressing concern that needs to be addressed at both individual and community levels.
