Study: young people feel unheard - missing openness and connection with parents
A recent study reveals that young people in Lithuania experience high levels of social isolation and emotional detachment from their families, highlighting a need for greater openness and connection with parents.
A recent study conducted in Lithuania has revealed alarming levels of social isolation among young people aged 18 to 24 as well as middle-aged individuals aged 45 to 54. The research indicates that younger individuals commonly feel estranged from their families and close relatives, whereas their older counterparts tend to drift apart from friends due to increased work responsibilities and life changes. The insights by Skaistė Varnienė, the head of market research at Tele2, emphasize a striking statistic that roughly one in three Lithuanians are at risk of social isolation, especially those with low emotional resilience.
The study further reveals that individuals with lower emotional resilience - defined by their ability to cope with life challenges - face heightened risks of social isolation. An astonishing 83% of these vulnerable individuals fall into the social isolation risk category, indicating a crucial link between emotional well-being and social connectivity. The expert noted that those experiencing challenges in communication often report feeling emotionally vulnerable, suggesting that the need for deeper connections is critical for mental health and societal well-being.
Additionally, the research sheds light on the prevailing attitudes among the youth regarding family formation, revealing a general consensus that young people do not rush into starting families. This stagnation may be partially attributed to the emotional disconnection they feel from their parents, as expressed in the concerns raised by the study. Such findings pose important questions for parents, educators, and policymakers about how to foster emotional openness and strengthen familial bonds, vital for combating feelings of loneliness and social separation within the community.
