Mobile internet usage in Lithuania is growing rapidly, but experts warn - network expansion is stalling
Mobile internet usage in Lithuania is on the rise, but experts caution that network expansion is facing significant challenges due to inadequate investment.
Mobile internet usage in Lithuania has shown rapid growth, with the country's electronic communications sector revenues projected to reach €921.3 million in 2025, marking a 5.1% increase from the previous year. According to Jūratė Šovienė, the head of RRT, this short-term growth is driven mainly by increased data consumption. However, the long-term sustainability of this growth hinges on sufficient investments in network development and modernization, which are currently lagging behind the growing demand.
The data transmission services segment has become a significant contributor to this growth, accounting for 64% of the sector's total revenue, which stands at €589.3 million, representing a 6.5% increase from 2024. The rise in revenue has been largely fueled by an increase in data usage, as consumers shift towards faster internet plans and the development of machine-to-machine (M2M) technologies and cloud solutions. As a result, traditional services like voice calls, SMS, and paid television are witnessing a continuous decline in popularity, as consumers increasingly prefer data-driven services.
Experts emphasize that while the current trends point towards an expanding mobile internet landscape, the reluctance or inability of service providers to allocate sufficient resources for infrastructure development poses a significant risk to future expansion. Without adequate investments, there's a looming concern that network stagnation may hamper the growth potential in the sector, ultimately affecting the accessibility and speed of mobile internet services for consumers in Lithuania.
