VRK Determines the Number of Municipal Council Members to be Elected: Changes in Three Municipalities
The VRK has announced changes to the number of municipal council members to be elected in three municipalities in Lithuania ahead of the 2027 local elections.
In a recent announcement, the Electoral Commission of Lithuania (VRK) has revealed the updated numbers regarding municipal council members that will be elected in local governments. The highest number of council members will come from Vilnius, boasting 51 members due to its population exceeding 500,000. Conversely, the municipality of Birštonas will see the fewest representatives, with only 15 members elected to its council.
The VRK's decision also reflects changes from the previous municipal elections held in 2023. Specifically, the councils in AkmenÄ— and Kalvarija will each have four fewer council members, while Palanga will gain four additional members when compared to the previous election cycle. These adjustments demonstrate the authorities' attempts to balance representation in relation to the population size and other demographic factors.
In preparation for the upcoming local elections in 2027, the VRK has established the necessary signatures required to nominate candidates for major positions within the councils, including mayoral candidates. Notably, the overall number of representatives to be elected will decrease to 1,494, a slight drop from the 1,498 elected in 2023, highlighting ongoing modifications in Lithuania's local governance structures.
