VRK: After the 2027 elections, the number of council members will change in three municipalities

The Lithuanian electoral commission announced a reduction in council members for two municipalities and an increase for one after the 2027 elections.

The Electoral Commission of Lithuania has reported that following the elections slated for 2027, the number of council members will decrease by four in the municipalities of Akmenė district and Kalvarija, while Palanga will see an increase of four members in its council. Overall, the total number of elected municipal council members will drop from 1498 in 2023 to 1494 in 2027. This revision comes as part of an effort to optimize local governance in response to demographic and administrative changes.

The report further details the distribution of council members across various municipalities, with the highest number of representatives being elected from Vilnius City, which will have 51 council members, contrasting with Birštonas Municipality, which will have the least at just 15 members. These changes reflect an adjustment in representation in line with population shifts and municipal needs, aiming for a more effective local governance structure.

In addition to the changes in council member counts, the VRK has established the required number of signatures for candidates running for mayor or for candidate lists. It has also set regulations on the minimum and maximum numbers of candidates that a political party, political committee, or coalition may present. The local elections along with direct mayoral elections will take place in early 2027, with the exact date to be confirmed by this autumn.
