New VRK member I. Barišauskė sworn in Seimas

I. Barišauskė has been appointed to the VRK by the Democratic Union 'For Lithuania', filling a vacancy left by Agnė Silickienė, who faces large-scale corruption allegations.

I. Barišauskė was recently sworn in to the VRK (Central Electoral Commission) by the Lithuanian Seimas (Parliament) after being nominated by the Democratic Union 'For Lithuania'. Her appointment comes in the wake of Agnė Silickienė's resignation amid serious accusations of corruption related to a major investigation. This reshuffling ensures that the VRK maintains its full complement of members while continuing its crucial role in overseeing elections in the country.

Barišauskė has previously served as an advisor to Saulius Skvernelis, the former Prime Minister, where she provided legal counsel and worked closely with him during his tenure. Her background in legal advisory roles could be of significant benefit as she undertakes her new responsibilities within the VRK. The commission currently has 11 members, including chairperson Lina Petronienė, but is designed to have a total of 12 members, highlighting the importance of a complete team in managing electoral processes.

The context surrounding her appointment, particularly the corruption allegations against her predecessor, reflects ongoing concerns about integrity within the electoral process in Lithuania. The investigations into large-scale corruption, which have seen numerous arrests, emphasize the necessity for trustworthy officials in the VRK, making Barišauskė's role not only pivotal for the commission's operations but also critical in restoring public confidence in Lithuania’s electoral system.
