Barcelona: Competition for Terminal Station
The Port of Barcelona has announced a competition for the concession of a new multi-purpose sea terminal at the Princep d’Espanya dock as the current concession is set to expire later this year.
The Port of Barcelona, headed by José Alberto Carbonell Camallonga, has initiated a competition for the concession of a new public multi-purpose maritime terminal located at the Princep d’Espanya dock. This initiative comes as the existing concession is scheduled to end later this year, prompting the need for new operators to ensure operational continuity. The port authorities highlight the importance of maintaining a competitive service open to third-party operators in this dynamic environment.
The new terminal, spanning an area of 87,425 square meters, is designed to facilitate the handling of general cargo and specific mixed transports, while explicitly excluding specialized activities such as passenger transport and the transfer of dry and liquid bulk cargo. This strategic move is essential for adapting to the growing demands in maritime transport and ensuring that the Port of Barcelona remains competitive in the regional and global maritime market.
The projected investment for this new project is estimated at approximately 3.6 million euros, which will be allocated towards civil engineering works and the necessary facilities. This investment is expected to not only enhance the port's operational capabilities but also contribute to the economic development of the surrounding region by providing new opportunities and fostering competition among maritime service providers.
