Metro cancels bidding and extends the contract for the Barra Funda Terminal until 2050
The São Paulo Metro has canceled its bidding process for a new administrator for the Barra Funda Terminal and has extended its contract with the current manager until 2050.
The São Paulo Metro has decided to cancel the bidding process initiated last year for selecting a new administrator for the Barra Funda Bus Terminal, a pivotal transportation hub in the western part of the capital. Instead, they have opted to extend the existing contract with Consórcio Prima, which has managed the terminal since its inception in the 1980s. This new agreement ensures that the terminal will remain under their management until 2050 and includes a substantial investment of R$ 29 million allocated for necessary infrastructure improvements.
This contract extension comes with financial obligations, including about R$ 80 million to be paid as a concession fee to the Metro. The existing operator, which has been managing the terminal for 37 years, is now set to oversee it for at least another 24 years. The Metro has indicated that although the bidding process was canceled, many of the requirements outlined in the original tender documents have been integrated into the new agreement, which is intended to enhance the overall functionality and safety of the terminal.
Among the planned improvements are significant renovation projects such as the replacement of access ramp covers, restructuring of platforms, and upgrading various facilities. These enhancements aim to modernize the terminal and uplift the travel experience for commuters. With these developments, the São Paulo Metro is taking steps to ensure the terminal continues to serve as a critical node in the city's public transportation network, addressing both current and future needs of the population.
