Icing conditions have led to the poorest driving conditions on major roads in Southern Latvia, particularly along the Daugavpils highway and in parts of Zemgale, Kurzeme, and Latgale regions.
On Monday morning, a report from VSIA 'Latvijas valsts ceΔΌi' highlighted the severe driving conditions resulting from icing in Southern Latvia, where the Daugavpils highway is entirely covered in ice. Major roads in the Zemgale region, the southern part of Kurzeme, and the southern part of Latgale are also experiencing hazardous conditions, which can significantly impact travel safety and efficiency in these areas.
Conversely, the northern part of Latgale, along with central and northern Vidzeme and northern Kurzeme, have been reported to have satisfactory driving conditions, offering some respite for drivers in those areas. This disparity in road conditions underscores the broader weather impacts on regional transport and highlights the importance of regional infrastructure management.
In response to the hazardous conditions, a fleet of 71 winter service vehicles is actively engaged in road maintenance efforts. The involvement of these vehicles is critical in addressing the immediate safety concerns posed by the icy roads, and ongoing monitoring will be essential as weather conditions continue to evolve throughout the winter season.
