In response to severe flooding that has impacted the canton of Milagro in the Guayas province, Ecuador's Ministry of Public Health (MSP) has mobilized medical brigades and initiated a sanitary response plan to assist those affected. The response strategy has been designed to prioritize immediate medical attention, epidemiological control, and the prevention of disease outbreaks in shelters and flooded areas. The flooding has been caused by heavy rains leading to the overflow of the Milagro River, causing significant areas of the canton to remain submerged. As of Tuesday, approximately 70% of Milagro's territory was still under water, demonstrating the scale of the disaster. Health teams have been dispatched to critical points, including the Unidad Educativa 17 de Septiembre, which has been set up as a shelter for those displaced by the flooding. Here, 35 health professionals are providing ongoing medical attention to around 310 affected individuals. This effort underscores the immediate need for medical services in the face of natural disasters, particularly as the displaced require continuous care for various health issues.
