Milagro drains floods with a pump that empties an Olympic swimming pool per hour

The Guayas Prefecture is draining floodwaters in Milagro using a high-capacity pump to address the impact of heavy rains.

The Guayas Prefecture has initiated efforts to drain water accumulated from heavy rains in the city of Milagro by installing a powerful water pump. This large-scale intervention, led by Prefect Marcela Aguiñaga, aims to reduce stagnant water levels and enable the outflow to natural channels in the affected canton. Technicians from the Provincial Government activated a high-flow pumping system in the Bellavista sector, essential to managing the flooding crisis.

A notable feature of this pumping operation is the 20-inch pump, capable of evacuating a volume of water equivalent to an Olympic swimming pool every hour. The accumulated water is directed through a high-density flexible hose to the Belín Estuary, a channel that has previously undergone interventions by the Prefecture for drainage purposes. The action taken by the government shows their commitment to swiftly addressing the infrastructure challenges posed by the recent extreme weather patterns.

These measures are critical in helping restore normalcy in Millagro, where flooding from intense rainfall has disrupted residents’ lives and caused potential damage to property. By ensuring that the flooded areas get adequate drainage, local authorities hope to prevent future flooding incidents and mitigate the impact of extreme climate events. The collaboration between government agencies illustrates a responsive approach to community challenges, aiming for more resilient urban planning and disaster management in Ecuador.
