Almost 50% of Milagro remains underwater due to rains: Prefecture proposes conducting a comprehensive hydrological study

Heavy rains in Ecuador have resulted in significant flooding in the city of Milagro, leading to a humanitarian response from local authorities.

On February 23, heavy rainfall caused the Milagro River to overflow, inundating various sectors of the eponymous canton in Ecuador. By February 24, approximately 70% of the area was submerged, prompting the establishment of a shelter at the 17 de Septiembre educational unit, which accommodated 302 individuals displaced by the flooding. As conditions improved slightly by February 25, reports indicated that about 50% of the territory remained underwater, with some neighborhoods still severely impacted.

Prefect Marcela Aguiñaga assessed the situation in the hardest-hit areas and announced the activation of humanitarian assistance efforts. Medical, veterinary, and fumigation brigades were deployed in affected sectors such as San Miguel and Ciudadela Unida. The Prefecture also distributed over 700 aid kits, mattresses, and provided logistical support using boats and a makeshift barge to assist those in need. The local government's comprehensive response highlights the urgency of the situation and the need for further action.

In the wake of these floods, the local government has proposed conducting a comprehensive hydrological study to better understand the dynamics of water flow and flooding in the region. Given the frequency and intensity of rainfall in recent months, such an initiative could help mitigate future risks and improve preparedness measures. As communities continue to recover, the emphasis on systematic studies underscores a proactive approach to managing natural disasters in this vulnerable area of Ecuador.
