Lagos diverts traffic for 12 weeks on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway
The Lagos State Government has implemented a 12-week traffic diversion plan due to reconstruction work on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
The Lagos State Government has declared a traffic diversion plan for the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway as part of a reconstruction initiative expected to last for 12 weeks. This reconstruction will affect a key section of the expressway between Super Bus-Stop and Ilepo Bus-Stop, with the work being managed by the Federal Ministry of Works. The project is scheduled to commence on March 7 and conclude on May 30, 2026, during which time the main carriageway heading towards Lagos will be entirely closed to traffic.
In an official statement, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, outlined alternative routes for motorists traveling from Abeokuta or Sango Tollgate to Lagos/Oshodi. Drivers are encouraged to take the BRT Corridor from Super Bus-Stop, exiting at Pleasure Bus-Stop (Ilepo) for continued travel. This diversion aims to minimize congestion and maintain traffic flow in the busy corridor as the construction progresses.
The decision reflects the government’s commitment to infrastructure development and enhancement of road safety. However, it also poses potential challenges for commuters in terms of travel time and route planning, necessitating public awareness and compliance with the new traffic guidelines to avoid disruptions during the reconstruction period.
