Govt closes Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway for repairs
The Lagos State Government has announced a four-week partial closure of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway for vital road repairs.
The Lagos State Government has made an announcement regarding a partial closure of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway, which will take place over a duration of four weeks starting on February 11, 2026. This closure is necessary to allow the Federal Ministry of Works to undertake rehabilitation works on the road, which are critical for maintaining the safety and functionality of this vital transportation route. The construction work will impact both inbound and outbound lanes along a stretch of the expressway, specifically from the U-Turn Bus Stop to Sango Tollgate.
Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Commissioner for Transportation, outlined details of the project in a statement shared on the social media platform X. He emphasized that in order to minimize traffic disruptions, the rehabilitation work will be divided into two phases. The first phase will focus on traffic heading towards Abeokuta and will take place from February 11 to March 4, 2026, during which the affected section will be closed for repairs. This phased approach aims to ensure that while one side of the road is under construction, some traffic can continue to flow smoothly on the other side.
The proposed timeline for the completion of all rehabilitation works is set for March 11, 2026. Local authorities are encouraging motorists to plan their routes accordingly to avoid delays and are liaising with traffic management agencies to implement measures to ease congestion during the period of the roadworks. This project is part of the government's efforts to improve road infrastructure in Lagos State, which is crucial for both commercial and personal transportation in the region.
