The long-awaited day is here: income tax declarations can be submitted

As of today, residents can submit their income tax declarations for the previous year using a simplified electronic form.

Starting today, residents of Latvia are able to submit their annual income tax declarations for the previous year. The State Revenue Service (VID) has introduced a simplified income declaration form for 2025, which streamlines the process significantly. Unlike in previous years, users will no longer need to choose between a 'Simplified' or 'Detailed' declaration form, making the system easier to understand and use, as it has been improved with clearer terminology and fewer fields to fill out. Additionally, further explanations have been added to assist users in understanding what income needs to be declared.

The revamped declaration preparation system automatically fills in essential information using data available to the VID, thereby simplifying the process for users. A notable change this year is that the calculation results are now explained in text rather than highlighted with color-coded borders, further enhancing clarity for the user. This user-friendly update reflects the VID’s commitment to facilitate tax compliance among residents without compromising the accuracy of the information.

As in previous years, individuals can include their own and family members’ receipts for eligible expenses when submitting their declarations. Documents proving these expenditures can be sent using the mobile app "Mans VID," allowing for a more straightforward and efficient submission process. By making these updates, the VID aims to encourage timely submissions and improve the overall experience for taxpayers, which could potentially influence the compliance rates positively as well as foster a more engaged taxpayer community in Latvia.
