"We will take revenge for you" - Vandalism at front doors... ‘vengeance agency’ rampant
An emerging trend of private vengeance agencies in South Korea involves individuals being hired to vandalize property and defame others, with police pursuing those behind the scheme.
In South Korea, a disturbing trend of private revenge agencies has surfaced, where individuals are hired to commit acts of vandalism against the properties of others. Law enforcement reports that offenders use social media platforms, specifically Telegram, to acquire anonymous assignments in return for payment. Recently, police in Pyeongtaek arrested a suspect involved in such crimes, along with two accomplices, after they vandalized a victim’s front door with a mixture of spoiled food and further defamed them with slanderous flyers.
The investigation revealed that the main suspect, referred to by the initial ‘G’, was instructed by an unidentified individual via Telegram and was paid 500,000 won for his involvement in the crime. This incident is part of a larger pattern of revenge-seeking acts, which have appeared in different locations across the region, suggesting that this is not an isolated case. Authorities noted that the intimidating anonymity of these attacks enables individuals to engage in such unlawful behaviors without fear of immediate repercussions.
Furthermore, the police's ongoing scrutiny has linked several incidents of property damage with similar characteristics, revealing that these are not just individual quarrels but part of an organized form of crime that combines anonymity with financial transactions. The law enforcement is concerned about the rise of these clandestine networks operating through digital platforms, and they are actively pursuing leads to uncover those orchestrating these revenge operations, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations against such activities.
