Peruvian State Electric Companies Reinforce Prevention Measures Due to Coastal El Niño
The Peruvian Ministry of Energy and Mines has announced preventive measures aimed at state electric companies in response to the Coastal El Niño phenomenon affecting the country.
The Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru declared a set of sectoral measures intended for state electric companies this Saturday to enhance preparation and response to the Coastal El Niño meteorological event impacting significant areas of the Andean nation. Minister Ángelo Alfaro highlighted that the companies must activate and implement contingency plans immediately. These plans are designed to prevent, mitigate, and respond to electrical service interruptions caused by heavy rains, landslides, river overflows, or strong winds.
In addition to activating contingency plans, the minister instructed the companies to prepare all necessary human and logistical resources. This includes the deployment of heavy machinery, backup generators, and rapid response teams to ensure that electrical service can be quickly restored in affected areas. The focus is on ensuring that the infrastructure remains intact and operational during adverse weather conditions, reflecting heightened awareness and readiness in the face of natural disasters that can occur due to climate change.
These measures underscore the Peruvian government's proactive approach to disaster management, especially with the anticipated increase in frequency and intensity of weather-related events like El Niño. It also emphasizes the importance of collaboration among public enterprises to maintain stability and to effectively handle emergencies, thereby minimizing disruptions that could impact households and businesses across the country.
