Mpox vaccine available in SUS only for priority groups; understand

The Mpox vaccine is available in Brazil's Unified Health System (SUS) for priority groups but not for the general population, according to the government of Rondônia.

The government of Rondônia announced that the Mpox vaccine is accessible through the Unified Health System (SUS), but it is not part of the routine vaccination calendar. The vaccine is being administered strategically to individuals at higher risk of exposure or severe disease, rather than through mass vaccination for the general populace. This cautious approach aims to control and contain the virus's transmission within vulnerable groups.

In Rondônia, the vaccination strategy aligns with guidelines set out by the Ministry of Health and is being implemented by the State Agency for Health Surveillance (Agevisa). The primary goal is to protect at-risk populations, diminish transmission rates, and enhance the health system's response to suspected and confirmed Mpox cases. Current circumstances dictate that the distribution of the vaccine is dependent on an evaluation of risk factors and the availability of doses sent to the states, preventing indiscriminate vaccination.

Recently, Rondônia reported two additional Mpox cases, marking a total of eight confirmed diagnoses within the state, including cases involving both adults and minors. The situations underscore the importance of targeted vaccination efforts, as public health officials seek to manage the spread of the disease effectively and ensure that those most likely to suffer severe outcomes are prioritized in the vaccination campaign.
