In the Seimas – a new proposal: the number of memorable days may increase

A new proposal in the Lithuanian Seimas aims to officially recognize additional memorable days, including Saint Hubert's Day for hunters and Social Insurance Day.

In an initiative led by social democrat members of the Seimas, Ilona Gelažnikienė and Jūratė Zailskienė, new amendments to the Commemorative Days Law have been proposed. If approved, these amendments would establish November 3 as Saint Hubert's Day, dedicated to hunters, and March 23 as Social Insurance Day. This move aims to officially recognize and promote cultural traditions associated with hunting while also acknowledging the importance of social insurance in the society.

I. Gelažnikienė highlights that the recognition of Saint Hubert's Day would provide an opportunity to present the traditions and historical development of hunting culture to a broader audience. Currently, hunting organizations observe this day voluntarily by organizing mass gatherings, educational events, and commemorative practices, but the formal recognition would enhance public awareness and appreciation for hunting as a significant human activity.

The proposal reflects a broader understanding of hunting in modern society, illustrating its role not only in cultural heritage but also in wildlife population management. Hunters play an essential role in mitigating damage to agricultural crops and forest growth caused by wild animals. They are also involved in preventing the spread of infectious diseases in wildlife, such as African swine fever, through compliance with legal requirements. Recognizing these contributions could lead to a more informed public discourse surrounding hunting and its implications in contemporary societal contexts.
