Exhibition brings together half a century of images from Folha photographers

To celebrate its 105th anniversary, Folha launches an exhibition showcasing works from 34 female photographers associated with the newspaper.

As part of its 105th anniversary celebrations, the Brazilian newspaper Folha will open an exhibition on March 3rd that features images by 34 female photographers who have worked with the publication. The exhibit will take place in the company’s headquarters located in downtown SΓ£o Paulo, highlighting the contributions and creativity of women in the field of journalism through visual storytelling. Visitors will have the opportunity to view a diverse collection of photographs that span nearly five decades, showcasing compelling moments captured by these talented photographers.

The exhibition, titled 'Photographers of Folha', includes works dating back to 1978, with the earliest piece documenting a concert by Brazilian musician Caetano Veloso at the Etapa school in SΓ£o Paulo, captured by Cristina Villares. The most recent image, taken by Karime Xavier, portrays patients involved in a free project for breast surgery recovery. Each participating photographer is represented by at least one image, except for Cris Bierrenbach, who showcases several portraits of members from the influential hip hop group Racionais.

This initiative to celebrate female photographers originated six years ago with Thea Severino, a former image editor at Folha, who recognized the newspaper's tradition of showcasing exceptional female talent. The exhibition not only reflects the significant contributions of women in photography over the decades but also serves as a vibrant reminder of the importance of diverse perspectives in journalism, especially in a historically male-dominated field.
