Over 300 parents have called for safety measures at Ozolnieki Secondary School following a report on violence in the school by Latvian Television.
In the wake of a report by Latvian Television’s 'Panorāma' regarding violence at Ozolnieki Secondary School, more than 300 parents have reached out to authorities, requesting enhanced safety measures within the school environment. The report brought to light concerns about an aggressive student, leading many parents to unite in their call for action to create a safer atmosphere for all students. This collective parental effort signifies a heightened awareness and urgency surrounding the issue of school safety in Latvia.
Inga Vanaga, the chair of the Latvian Education and Science Workers' Union (LIZDA), noted that this is the first time she has witnessed such widespread unity among parents since taking office. The parents' initiative stems from a need to protect their children from both potential harm and to support the child exhibiting aggressive behavior, who is reportedly not receiving adequate assistance. This situation highlights the challenges faced by educators and the responsibility of authorities to address behavioral issues in schools effectively.
The report aired on February 20, raised serious concerns about a student who has displayed violent behavior over the years, which has not been adequately addressed. The ongoing issue of safety measures in schools is increasingly becoming a focal point in Latvia as parents seek reassurance that their children can learn and grow in a secure environment. The growing demand for intervention reflects a critical moment for educational policy and school management in tackling student aggression and preserving a nurturing school climate.
