VIDEO: Parents protest against the closure of educational institutions in several municipalities

Parents in several municipalities in Latvia are protesting against school closures and changes to educational institutions due to declining student numbers.

In Jēkabpils municipality, a decision was made to implement changes to the school network for the upcoming academic year, which includes closing two primary schools and reorganizing six educational institutions. This reform will lead to the loss of basic education opportunities in six areas, while two areas will also lose access to secondary education. The municipality explained that these changes are necessary due to insufficient student numbers, but many parents are opposed to the decision and expressed their concerns during a protest.

Meanwhile, in Limbaži municipality, public pressure resulted in a shift from an initial plan regarding the management of five music and arts schools. Originally, the plan was to have one director oversee these schools, but the decision was amended to appoint two directors instead. This means that, for example, the Salacgrīva Art School and the Salacgrīva Music School, which were set to be managed by one director, will now have separate leadership, although some parents and school leaders remain dissatisfied with the compromise. They view having two directors as preferable to remote management of the schools.

These developments highlight the broader demographic crisis affecting Latvia, as municipalities are grappling with declining student populations that are forcing educational restructuring and eliciting strong reactions from local communities. While the government argues that such reforms are necessary for sustainable education, the pushback from parents shows the community's deep concern for their children's educational future and the accessibility of educational resources within their regions.
