A police operation in Northern Minas resulted in the arrest of seven individuals and the seizure of 19 firearms as part of an effort to combat poaching.
The Brazilian military police launched Operation Silvestre in Northern Minas, aimed at addressing the issue of predatory hunting in the region. From Monday, the 23rd, to Friday, the 27th, specialized environmental police teams conducted a series of preventive and repressive actions focused on combating the illegal hunting, capture, and confinement of wild animals. Key areas targeted included the Veredas do Peruaçu State Park and the Pandeiros River Wildlife Refuge, where illegal hunting activities are prevalent.
Throughout the operation, police managed to apprehend a significant number of firearms, totaling 19, which underscores the severity and organized nature of poaching activities in the region. In a notable incident, ten firearms were discovered concealed in a PVC pipe under flooring, highlighting the lengths to which poachers may go to hide their illegal tools. The operation led to seven arrests, with individuals charged not only with poaching but also with the illegal possession and ownership of firearms, reflecting the dual threat posed by illegal hunting and unregulated firearm access.
