Anete Randma, a student at East Texas University in the United States, made headlines by breaking the Estonian short-distance mile run record twice within a span of just two days during the Southland Conference championships. Initially, she ran a time of 4:49.72 in the preliminary heats, which set a new record before she improved her time in the finals to 4:48.55, securing a fourth-place finish overall. This achievement not only highlights her exceptional athletic talent but also showcases significant progress from her predecessors in the sport.
The previous record for the mile run was held by Kadri Kelve, who set a time of 4:52.24 in 2003. Randma’s remarkable performance not only surpassed this long-standing record but also emphasizes her position as a rising star in middle-distance running for Estonia. The mile run, which is characterized as a short-distance race completed on a 200-meter track, has seen an exciting new benchmark set by Randma.
In addition to her mile record, Randma also excelled in the 3000-meter event, clocking in her first university record at 9:47.81 on February 8. She continued to enhance her performance shortly after, achieving a time of 9:36.90 on February 21. These accomplishments signal her potential as a competitive athlete, and they suggest a promising future for Estonian athletics on both national and international stages.
