The head of the temporary administration of "European Railways" in Latvia, Māris Dzelme, resigns
Māris Dzelme, the acting head of the "European Railways" project in Latvia, has resigned amid ongoing developments in the "Rail Baltica" project.
Māris Dzelme has stepped down from his position as the temporary head of "European Railways" (EDzL), the organization responsible for implementing the "Rail Baltica" project in Latvia. This resignation reflects ongoing management changes within the organization, especially following the April 2024 resignation of other key board members including Kaspars Vingris and Arnis Staltmanis. Dzelme's departure comes at a crucial time as the project's governance and management structure are being reassessed.
The "Rail Baltica" project, a significant infrastructure initiative in the Baltic region, has been receiving substantial funding from the European Union, covering approximately 81-85% of the project's costs. The remainder is financed by the Latvian state budget. As reported, the Latvian Ministry of Transport is playing a crucial role as both the recipient of EU support and the project's execution authority, emphasizing the importance of effective leadership within the EDzL.
Jānis Naglis, with extensive experience in financial management and a background in previous roles including finance director at Longo Group and financial controller at Nokia Networks, is expected to take over temporarily. His appointment could help stabilize the organization as it navigates the managerial challenges that arise from the ongoing complexities of the "Rail Baltica" project, contributing to its strategic goals of enhancing connectivity across the region.
